Tell MI Reps and Senators: Farmers Need Help

Details

Farmer suicides have reached a crisis level in Michigan. Farmers have one of the highest rates of suicide. But Michigan House Republicans just cut the funding for farmer suicide prevention by going outside of normal legislative channels.

Many farmers have insurance that doesn’t cover mental health care, or they can’t afford insurance at all. Without support for mental health care, many farmers have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket for the help they need, or go without. Too many give up, cutting their lives short and leaving broken families behind.

State Reps. Matt Beirlein (R-Vassar) and Jasper Martus (D-Flushing) are trying to restore this funding in a future supplemental spending bill. We need to demand that our representatives restore funding for farmer suicide prevention. Is this how we treat the people who put food on our tables?
