URGENT: NO VOTER SUPPRESSION!

HB 4765 Would Disenfranchise Millions of Voters in Michigan – YOUR VOICE NEEDED NOW

There is another effort moving right now to suppress voters across Michigan. House Bill 4765 is on the agenda tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM in the House Election Integrity Committee.

HB 4765 would amend Michigan election law to require individuals to provide documentary proof of United States citizenship when registering to vote. It would also add new identification and verification requirements tied to voter registration and voting procedures.

Let’s be clear about what this means...This is voter suppression. Full stop! If passed, HB 4765 will:

  • Require people to produce documents such as a passport or certified birth certificate
  • Impact the approximately 5.8 million eligible Michigan voters who do not have a valid passport
  • Disproportionately affect married women, transgender people, and others whose birth certificates do not match their current legal name
  • Impact seniors, people with disabilities, and justice impacted residents
  • Make mail registration harder for those who rely on it
  • Add confusion, red tape, and administrative delays

Statewide context:

  • Approximately 7 million registered voters in Michigan
  • Approximately 5.8 million Michiganders do not have a valid passport
  • Approximately 2 million Michigan IDs are Enhanced IDs
  • A certified Michigan birth certificate costs approximately 40 dollars
  • A U.S. passport costs between 135 and 300 dollars
  • More than 2.2 million women in Michigan do not have birth certificates that match their current legal name

If enacted, this requirement would apply to millions of eligible voters. They are moving this bill through quickly. We must respond just as quickly. We are asking you to submit written testimony or attend in person to oppose HB 4765.

Please send a comment to the House Election Integrity Committee and ask them to oppose HB 4765.
