Data Privacy: Regulate Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR’s)

Details

HB 5492 and 5493 are bipartisan bills to regulate Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR’s). These are the small, mobile or mounted, cameras that capture every license plate passing by, sometimes hundreds, per minute. Because ALPR’s are absolutely unregulated, Michiganders’ private information can be sent practically anywhere, including to ICE. While we would probably prefer that these cameras simply be banned, HB 5492 and 5493 would establish some common sense guard rails, including requirements for transparency and accountability. Every Michigander has a right to data privacy, so it’s urgent to tell your representative and senator to support HB 5492 and 5493.
