Call MI Reps: Don’t Use Prisoners to Rig Redistricting
- Details
-
SB 537 would change the way incarcerated persons are counted for the purposes of redistricting. Under this bill, the prisoner’s address would not be their home community but the location of the prison. Sounds innocent, but these addresses are used for redistricting, and this change would undercount the communities that that prisoners are part of. Redistricting should be fair, not used as a tool to take power away from local communities. Urge your state senator to oppose SB 537.

My name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [City. ZIP]. I urge you to vote “no” on SB 537. It would change the way that incarcerated persons are counted for the purposes of redistricting. This bill would change prisoners’ addresses from their home communities to the locations of their prisons. That would mean that the communities the prisoners belong to would be undercounted. I urge you to oppose SB 537.
