Tell MI Representatives and Senators: Regulate Data Centers Now

Since Michigan passed major tax exemptions to attract data centers, proposed projects have surged across the state. These facilities consume enormous amounts of water and electricity and have the potential to pave over hundreds of acres of valuable Michigan farmland — with no formal mechanism for affected communities to weigh in or even be notified. The State House and State Senate have introduced bills that address this. They need to hear support from their constituents to push these bills into laws. Senate Bill 761 — would stop any company from withdrawing more than 2 million gallons of water per day from Michigan's water supply for data center cooling. Senate Bill 762 — would require annual public reporting on how much energy and water data centers are using. Senate Bill 763 — would block data centers from passing infrastructure improvement costs on to residential ratepayers. House Bills 5594, 5595, and 5596 — would place a temporary pause on new data center construction until April 2027, giving communities the time they need to study the real impacts. House Bills 5396, 5397, and 5398 — would repeal the sales, use, and property tax exemptions currently granted to data center companies. House Bill 5399 — would ban local officials from signing secret nondisclosure agreements about data center projects, so that residents know what is being decided on their behalf. Please take a few minutes to call your State Representative and State Senator to support these bills

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [YOUR CITY/TOWNSHIP]. I am calling to ask that [REPRESENTATIVE/SENATOR NAME] to support the following data center bills: ● Senate Bill 761 (water limits) ● ● ● ● ● Senate Bill 762 (public reporting) Senate Bill 763 (ratepayer protection) House Bills 5594, 5595, and 5596 (temporary pause on construction) House Bills 5396, 5397, and 5398 (tax exemption repeal) House Bill 5399 (open government) These bills represent common-sense guardrails. Michigan families pay their fair share of taxes, deserve clean water and affordable utility bills, and have a right to know what is being decided in their communities. I urge [REPRESENTATIVE/SENATOR NAME] to support these bills and stand up for residents over corporate interests
