URGENT - Mop Up Michigan!

Details

Tell your legislators that voters want to vote on Mop Up Michigan this November! It is critical to let voters decide, and the legislature should take no action on the Mop Up Michigan initiative.

Now that the Mop Up Michigan initiative has been certified by the Board of State Canvassers, as a statutory initiative the legislature is entitled to 40 days to either pass the legislation themselves or let it go to the ballot for voters to decide. It is critical for the success of this measure that voters have the final say on MMOP!

Over half a million voters signed the Mop Up Michigan initiative to ban state contractors and regulated utilities from contributing to the candidates who are meant to be regulating them. Voters acted to gather signatures for this initiative after politicians failed to act on similar bipartisan legislation that sat in the legislature for years.

Now that MMOP has been certified, the legislature has the option to simply adopt the legislation. Tell your state rep and your state senator NOT TO ADOPT and instead send the Mop Up Michigan initiative straight to the ballot for voters to decide.

If the legislature adopts the language of the initiative and passes it as legislation this session, they can amend the statute and completely gut it in the next session with a simple majority vote. That would throw out all the work we've done over the past year to get this far. If MMOP is passed by voters on the November ballot, it takes a 3/4 majority vote in both chambers to amend the legislation, which means it has a lasting chance to make a transformative difference in Michigan politics.
