Tell MI Reps and Senators: Patients Deserve Privacy
- Details
-
Anti-choice Republicans in the Michigan legislature are once again trying to punish women who have abortions, while invading their privacy in ways not done for any other medical procedure.
Three bills introduced in the Michigan House will force the state’s Department of Health and Human Services to pry into and report personal information from patients, including:
· Their age and marital status · The patient’s reason for the abortion · Whether or not “the fetus showed evidence of life”
House Bills 5201, 5202, and 5203 would require this information for both surgical procedures and prescriptions for abortion pills.
Some of this information had been collected until the Reproductive Health Act passed in 2023, repealing a 1978 law. Republicans claim this information is necessary to protect women, though it’s difficult to see how (marital status?) these practices do that. Opponents of the bill include the ACLU of Michigan and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Michigan chapter.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [REP NAME] to oppose House Bills 5201, 5202, and 5203. The circumstances of an abortion procedure are between the patient and their doctor. We already voted to protect reproductive rights in our state, and we will not accept any erosion of those rights. Thank you.
