Tell MI Senators: Running Over People is Not OK

Details

Michigan Senate Bill 500 would change state law to give individuals civil immunity if they injure, kill, or damage property while claiming to act in self-defense during a riot. The bill expands protections far beyond existing self-defense laws by preventing victims from suing for damages, even in cases of serious injury or death.

Because the legal definition of “riot” is vague and broad, peaceful protests that include isolated incidents could be swept into this category. This creates a dangerous loophole where excessive or reckless force might be excused simply by labeling the situation a riot. SB 500 would significantly weaken civil accountability in Michigan, making it harder for victims to seek justice and potentially encouraging escalation during public demonstrations.

Hello, my name is ________, and I’m a constituent in [your city].

I’m calling to urge [Sen. Name] to vote NO on Senate Bill 500. This bill would give people civil immunity if they harm or even kill someone while claiming “self-defense” during a riot, even if the force used was excessive. This bill removes accountability for violent actions, puts peaceful protesters and bystanders at risk, and encourages escalation instead of public safety.

Michigan already has strong self-defense laws; SB 500 goes far beyond them by blocking victims from seeking justice. Please protect our communities and reject SB 500. Thank you.
