Tell MI Reps: No Protection Racket

Details

Senate bills 611 and 612 would prohibit law enforcement agencies from charging the victim to serve a personal protection order (PPO) related to domestic violence or stalking. These bills have passed the Senate, but have not been brought up for a vote in the House.

Instead of charging the filer the fee for serving the PPO, the bills also would create the Personal Protection Order Fund that would be charged instead ($1 million was secured through the 2026 state budget passed last month). A serving law enforcement agency could charge and collect $50 from the Fund for completed service of a domestic violence or stalking PPO. Agencies are allowed to contract with a process server.

43 states and the District of Columbia currently require agencies to serve protection orders or restraining orders without charging the victim a fee.
